苏格登酒厂成立于1838年,距今已有170年的历史。酒厂位于苏格兰高地的黑岛(Black Isle),这是当地唯一的一家威士忌蒸馏厂。黑岛名字叫岛,但并非真正的“岛屿”,而是三面环海的半岛。
酿造苏格登的泉水取自超过1,000尺高的两座高山湖泊: 娜英湖与波娜湖
(Loch nan Eun & Loch nam Bonnach),意思是“飞鸟之湖”以及“泥煤之湖”。娜英湖水源自于天上的雨水,波娜湖水则来自地下的涌泉。盖尔语为“由天上与水汇集而成; 大地泉水涌入而成”,是天与地的恩赐所形成的“天地之水”。
酒长所选大麦,皆是当地农夫生产的优质大麦。肥沃的黑土加上此地冬天气候温和少雪,使黑岛成为苏格兰高地难得一见的优质大麦(Barley)产区,而黑岛岛之“黑”,正是由此处色深丰饶的土壤而来。
苏格登酒厂采用传统的铜制蒸馏器并以蒸气间接加热,并且只截取中段珍贵且完美平衡的酒心,保证酒液顺滑的口感。苏格登威士忌不像多数斯贝塞区(Speyside)威士忌风味皆受雪莉酒桶所主导,它的独特之处在于使用50%欧洲雪莉橡木桶与50%北美白橡木桶进行熟成,这使得苏格登呈现单一纯麦威士忌中少见圆润滑顺却又层次丰富的平衡口感。
Established in 1838 on Thomas Mackenzie’s land, the Glen Ord distillery adopted the Mackenzie motto “I shine not burn”. The phrase refers to their valour, steadfast qualities, and constant support for the independence of Scotland, but equally well describes the smooth tasting malt. The key early figure was Alexander MacLennan. After he went bankrupt, in 1870, Alexander Mackenzie became Ord’s guiding spirit, rebuilding the distillery after a fire in 1878 and registering a trademark for the single malt in 1882. Antecedents of the current owners, James Watson of Dundee, acquired the distillery in 1896 and have produced its fine, smooth single malt ever since.
Traditional slow C19th process, locally produced ingredients and 12 years in a special choice of casks develop a purely and simply smoother style. Water from “heaven and earth” comes from two mountain lochs, one rainwater-fed, one by spring water.
